BASIC IDEA OF B.El.Ed

The Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) were first formulated by the Maulana Azad Centre for Elementary and Social Education (MACESE) in 1994-95. It is a four-year integrated professional degree program of teacher education. This course is usually done after the senior secondary stage (class XII). B.El.Ed is conducted by some colleges of Delhi University. The B.El.Ed. is the first Indian Professional Degree Programme for Elementary Teacher Education, offered at a Central University. The introduction of the B.El.Ed. programme in undergraduate colleges of the University of Delhi marks a move towards the creation of a cadre of Elementary Education professionals – a long awaited promise, beginning with the conception of the Central Institute of Education in 1947. The B.El.Ed. program prepares a student-teacher for a wide range of professional and academic options in elementary education. Some options can be as:

  • Teaching in elementary school i.e from class 1st to class 8th.
  • Teaching and research in elementary school( can be government or non government).
  • Subsequently qualifying to be teacher educators in various State Institutes.

I. Entrance Test

There will be  a minimum internal cut-off for each of the sections A (i) and A (ii). All sections and their parts are compulsory.

The Written Entrance Test will be of 3 hours duration. It   will consist of two sections A and B of Multiple Choice Questions.

Section A

Part (i): Questions will be based on comprehension and the ability to use language in different contexts. Candidates  are required to attempt both  English and Hindi questions.

Part (ii): Questions will be application based and those that entail thinking, reasoning and problem solving in mathematics. Candidates can choose to answer in Hindi  or  in English.

Section B

Part (i) Questions will be based on reasoning and application of concepts  in Science upto Class X. Candidates can choose to answer in Hindi or in English.

Part (ii) Questions will be based on interpretation of concepts in Social Sciences upto Class X.

Candidates can choose to answer in Hindi or in English.

II.  Class XII marks weightage

Weightage will be given to the marks obtained in (the same four subjects as per the eligibility conditions) Class XII examinations.

B. Interview

Only a limited number of candidates short-listed on the basis of the Written Entrance Test will be called for Interview. Parameters for the Interview: Subject knowledge, oral communication ability, understanding of children and social issues, potential for critical thinking, general awareness and reading interests.

B.El.Ed PROGRAMS & MAIN COURSE SYLLABUS :

The B.El.Ed. is designed to integrate the study of subject knowledge, human development, pedagogical knowledge and communication skills. The program offers both compulsory and optional theory courses. Each course type is described below:

  1. 1.      Theory

Students have to cover 19 theory courses in their four year program. The design of the theory courses includes study through projects and related field work.

  1. 2.      Foundation courses

These courses are designed to offer an in-depth study of: the process of child development and learning, various issues related to elementary education and to develop skills to relate and communicate.

  1. 3.      Core courses

Core courses offer the prospective teacher the opportunity to reconstruct concepts learnt in school and to integrate them with in an inter-disciplinary perspective.

  1. 4.      Pedagogy courses

pedagogy are designed to help develop core teaching skills specific to the teaching of young children

  1. 5.      Libral courses

Liberal optional provide students the opportunity to study specific disciplines with academic rigour.

These courses are designed to allow a variety of work experience with children within and outside elementary schools and opportunities for self- reflection and development.
